As a musical celebration of Hungary, the SZS opens the program with the Hungarian Dances by Brahms who, as a German, was fascinated with the Gypsy strains and dance rhythms of this colorful culture. French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet brings his poetic sensibility and heroic touch of the fiendishly charming Second Piano Concerto by Hungary’s prodigious son, Liszt. The Concerto for Orchestra is Bartok’s most influential orchestral works and the epitome of Hungary’s musical nationalism. It is a declaration of Bartok’s profound love for his country, deep preoccupation for mankind’s perilous plight, his aversion for Fascism, and acute verdict on the ideological struggle that challenged the tumultuous era in which he lived.

Jean-Yves Thibaudet | Piano
“Jean-Yves Thibaudet took the stage for a fiery account of Liszt’s second piano concerto, which he played with a commendable ferocity, tearing into the keyboard when not drawing from it gentler sprays of sound.” - Washington Post
“The piano score was rendered with flair by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who brought an energetic touch to the rollicking sections and a poetic limpidity to the moments of gossamer filigree.” – The New York Times
For more than three decades, Jean-Yves Thibaudet has performed world-wide, and built a reputation as one of today’s finest pianists.
This season takes Thibaudet to 14 countries, including extensive concerts in Asia with the Singapore, NHK, and Guangzhou symphony orchestras and the Malaysian, Hong Kong, and China philharmonics, the New York and Los Angeles philharmonics, Royal Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Thibaudet’s recording catalogue of more than 50 albums has received two Grammy nominations, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Diapason d’Or, the Choc du Monde de la Musique, the Edison Prize, as well as Gramophone and Echo awards.
